(554) This is supported by the saying of the Lord Messenger—exalted be his glory—to our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory—: "I and You are the two fathers of this nation."
I asked him—may God be pleased with him—regarding the words of God the Mighty and Sublime: {And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already passed. Indeed, it was an immorality and hateful [to God] and was evil as a way}1. He replied: "It is not permissible for the son to listen to one who has attached himself to his Lord, for in that he is his brother; so it is not allowed for him to listen to him."
I asked him—may God be pleased with him—regarding the words of God the Mighty and Sublime: {And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient}2. He replied: "My hearing regarding this from my sheikhs—may God be pleased with them—is that Lord Abu al-Khattab—peace be upon him—tested the believers. [Fear] is the power of the Adversary's call in which he terrifies the believers; Hunger is the lack of science during the days of the interval (al-fatra); Loss of wealth is the changing of religions; Loss of lives is the occultation of the Imams who are the souls (al-anfus); and Loss of fruits is the absence of miracles with 'western gifts' (al-tuhaf al-gharbiyya); and Give good tidings to the patient means: give tidings to the Connaissants during the maintenance of Dissimulation."
(555) Regarding His saying: {And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe}3. He said: My hearing regarding this is from my sheikh by his chain from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from al-Mufaddal ibn Umar—peace be upon him—who said: I said to my Master al-Sadiq—exalted be his glory—: "Inform me regarding the words of the Almighty: {And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe}4?"
