Then forgetfulness falls upon him instantly, and he walks and returns to what he was upon. Had he remained in his remembrance, his gall-bladder would have burst in grief and he would have died of regret; but he forgets and turns toward what is required of him."
Among what witnesses to the correctness of reincarnation is the saying of the Sublime and Exalted: {We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun ❁ That We may substitute your likes and bring you into being in that which you know not. ❁ And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?}1.
And the words of the Exalted: {Is one who is brought up in ornaments (al-hilya) while in dispute he is not clear?}2. Beasts have ornaments by which they are known; horses, mules, donkeys, and camels are brought up in ornaments and are known by them just as people know humans by their attributes and names, except that their forms are non-speaking and unclear because they are barred from speech.
And the words of the Sublime and Exalted: {Say, "Be you stones or iron ❁ Or a creation of that which is great in your breasts." Then they will say, "Who will return us?" Say, "He who created you the first time." Then they will wag their heads at you and say, "When is that?" Say, "Perhaps it is near" ❁ The Day He calls you and you respond with His praise and you think you remained not but a little.}3. Stones and iron are well-known, and that which is "great in your breasts" is gold and silver.
(513) It was related in the Mushaf of ibn Mas’ud: {And there is none of you but shall pass over it; it was upon [Ali] your Lord a decree determined.}.4
