Then Zufar is brought and He orders him to be tied to one of the pillars of Hell; he is shackled with three chains, and harsh, severe, iron-like guardians of Hell bind him and hem him in tightly.1 When Iblis looks at him, he says to him: 'Woe to you! Who are you? By God, I did not know that God created any creature but that he was beneath my feet.' Zufar remains silent and does not answer him. Then Iblis returns and says to him: 'Woe to you! I am the one who expelled Adam from Paradise, and I am the one who ordered Cain to kill his brother Abel when there was no believer in the world besides him. I am the one who destroyed the former peoples and ordered them to wickedness and they committed it, and I ordered them to tyranny, bloodshed, and the severing of kinship, and they did all of that. So who are you? Woe to you! What is it that made your punishment exceed mine?' At that point, Zufar answers him and says: 'Where are your deeds compared to my deeds, and where is your speech compared to my speech? Do you think you amount to anything? Are you not the one who expelled Adam from Paradise, as you claimed, but then you regretted that? For you said to Adam when he ate of the tree and his nakedness and the nakedness of his wife appeared to them: {Like the likeness of Satan when he says to man, "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says, "Indeed, I am quit of you. Indeed, I fear God, Lord of the worlds"}.2
"Then Pharaoh says to him the like of Iblis's words. Zufar says: 'Are you not the one who said: {And he said, "I am your most exalted lord"}3 but then you regretted that later and said out of fear of drowning: {And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except that in which the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims"}.4
