O Adam, these are My chosen ones from My creation." When the trial befell [Adam] and he fell into sin and was sent down from Paradise, he sought a means through them, and He forgave him for what he had committed.
As the Exalted said: {Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful}.1 His words to Iblis—may God curse him: {Were you arrogant then, or were you [already] among the High Ones?}2 were an indication toward these noble names and magnificent personages. They are, in my view, the personages of: the Will, the Primordial Nature (al-Fitra), the Science, the Power, and the Hidden Grace. The Meaning—exalted be His names—is their Pre-eternal One, not entering among them nor being of their number.
God the Mighty and Sublime said to Iblis: {He said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled. ❁ And indeed, upon you is My curse until the Day of Recompense." ❁ He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected." ❁ He said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved ❁ Until the Day of the time well-known." ❁ He said, "By Your might, I will surely mislead them all ❁ Except, among them, Your chosen servants."}3
It was related that the angels said: "This person has lived long (umira)," so he was named Umar in the Hashemite Cycle. This is supported by the words of the Sublime: {And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblis. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange}.4
