My father, may Allah have mercy on him, was righteous, compassionate, and tender toward me. His heart softened when he witnessed my state and verified my desire. He said: "O my son, this matter that you seek from me, I am not permitted to impart to you because I am your [biological] father; it is forbidden for me to bestow it upon you. Your tutor is Abu al-Hasan al-Rahawi, but in this city there is one more knowledgeable than him: Sheikh Abu al-Fath. Neither your tutor nor anyone else among the people of this land is permitted to 'open' (al-fath) the way for you except with his permission. However, I will ask Sheikh Abu al-Fath to answer you, and I will be subtle in my speech to him. I hope he grants my request regarding you. By your connection to him, you will attain the most exalted lineage in the religion and boast of his fatherhood among the believers."

I felt secure in what he promised me and I rejoiced. My master [Abu al-Fath] came to him, and my father explained my situation to him, saying: "I have perceived his maturity (rushd), and I ask you to address him, to impart to him the secret of Allah, and for him to be your [spiritual] son." He consented to that and commanded me to serve him whenever he was present and to be diligent in his companionship. I remained in that state for a time. Then he and my father met, and I wept before them, saying: "The time has come for you both to release my captivity and loosen my bonds."
