And the Sublime said: {So when Our command came, We made its highest part its lowest and rained upon them stones of layered hard clay}1. And the Mighty and Sublime said: {And We rained upon them a rain, and evil was the rain of those who were warned}2.
He called it by this repulsive name, "rain" (mataran), and blamed it, while He called the Water by the name of Life and praised it. The blessed and praised Water is the science that comes from the Gate, because the Heaven is the person of Salsal and the Earth is the person of al-Miqdad, and the substance of science flows from them to the believers.
The Orphans deliver the science that descends upon them from the Gate to the believers. The substance from the Gate is eternally connected to them, and thus it connects from them to the believers; and it is science, and by science is their life, for God the Almighty mentioned that science is life.
The Exalted said — exalted be His mention: {And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among the people like one whose likeness is in darkness, from which he cannot emerge? Thus it has been made attractive to the disbelievers that which they were doing}3. This person was dead through ignorance, and He revived him through the science delivered to him regarding the Oneness of God and His recognition; thus he lived and departed from the limit of the dead, who are the wrongdoers and disbelievers.
