Lord Abu Shu’ayb—peace be upon him—stood up, put on his sandals, and crossed an orchard in the courtyard of his house, a hundred paces wide, in a single step and stopped. Then he took another step and returned to his place, took off his sandals, and sat. Abu Abbad Muhammad ibn Abbad al-Basri said [to himself]: "If he willed, he could bring something greater than this." He [Abu Shu’ayb] said to me: "O Abu Abbad, look at the door behind your back in the hall; open it and see what you perceive." Abu Abbad said: There was no door in the hall. I turned, and suddenly there was a door behind my back. I opened it and entered, and I looked out upon darknesses, horrors, foul odors, and creatures eating one another in the most hideous forms. My mind was stunned and I said: "Indeed, this is a great horror!" He shouted to me: "Return, O Abu Abbad!" I returned, the door vanished, and I leaned my back against the wall. He gave me a short respite, then said: "Return, O Abu Abbad, open the door and see what you perceive." I returned, and there was the door in the wall. I opened it and looked out upon lights, luminaries, beautiful creatures, and pleasant scents. Those creatures were increase in the praise of God, His gratitude, His glorification, and prayers upon His Messenger Muhammad—exalted be his glory—and upon Amir Almuminin and the Imams after him, imam by imam, until the Master of the Time—exalted be his glory. I said: "Indeed, this is a great matter!"
Lord Abu Shu’ayb—peace be upon him—shouted: "Return, O Abu Abbad!" I returned, the wall became smooth, and the door vanished. I rose and said: "O my lord, what shall I say to those who doubt you after what I have seen?" He said to me: "Tell them what you saw, and make them know that there is no quest for a seeker beyond me regarding the Gatehood, until God manifests His affair." Abu Abbad went out and told the folk what he saw and what Lord Abu Shu’ayb—peace be upon him—said. Ishaq, Abu Abbad al-Hasan ibn al-Mundhir, and Habib al-Attar said: "Abu Shu’ayb has claimed the spiritual dimension (al-ma’nawiyya); had he remained upon the Gatehood, we would never have doubted him."
