The Shari said: "By God, these people are upon the truth!" So he joined their number, fought with them, and was killed. When he [Isa] overcame the Khattabiyya and they were all killed in the night, Isa ibn Musa stationed his army around them, surrounding them to guard them until morning so they could carry their heads to Baghdad along with the head of Abu al-Khattab. When morning came, Isa ibn Musa found none among the slain except the Shari man. He was terrified1 by this and ordered that his [the Shari's] head be cut off and carried to al-Dawaniqi [al-Mansur]. When he saw it, he said to his companions: "This is not the head of Abu al-Khattab, the companion of Ja'far ibn Muhammad, for I recognize him." He was informed of the news of Abu al-Khattab and what occurred with him and his companions. al-Mansur—may God curse him—said to him: "Keep this matter secret and do not broadcast it." Abu al-Khattab said at that time: "I used to be called Muhammad ibn Abi Kabsha, and I have now become Muhammad ibn Abi Zaynab, and I shall be called Muhammad ibn Nusayr."
Its meaning: there was a diviner in the Age of Ignorance called Muhammad ibn Abi Kabsha who informed them of news of the heaven and earth, what they did in their houses, and what would happen to them tomorrow. When Lord Muhammad—exalted be his glory—appeared, Muhammad ibn Abi Kabsha vanished, and our Lord Muhammad came and informed them of what was in their souls, what occurred in former nations, and what would happen in the heavens and earths. The Quraysh said: "This is Muhammad ibn Abi Kabsha," because of the actions and speech they heard, for he is He in reality.
