I took the book and found therein: [In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. This is the covenant of God to Adam: that He is creating from his loins a prophet called Muhammad who commands noble character and forbids the worship of idols. And O Rozaba, you are the revelation of Jesus, so believe and leave the religion of the Magi.] I was struck with an overwhelming shock and a great hardship befell me. My parents found out, so they seized me and left me in a deep well, saying: 'Either you renounce what you are upon, or we shall kill you.'

I said to them: 'Do as you wish, for the love of Muhammad has taken hold of my heart and shall never leave it.' He continued: I did not know Arabic before reading that book, but God made me understand Arabic from the moment I read it. I remained in the well, and they would hand me small loaves of bread each day. When my situation grew long, I raised my hand to the heaven and said: 'O Lord, You are the Beloved of Muhammad and His Successor to me; so by the right of Muhammad and his lineage, hasten my relief from what I am in.' A person in white clothes came to me and said: 'Rise, O Rozaba.' He took my hand and came to the hermitage.

I began saying: 'I bear witness that there is no deity except God, and that Jesus is the Spirit of God, and that Muhammad is the Beloved of God.' The dweller of the hermitage looked down at me and said: 'Are you Rozaba?' I said: 'Yes.'

He said: 'Ascend to me.' I ascended to him and stayed in his hermitage for two full years. When death approached him, I said: 'O my lord, to whom do you leave me?' He said: 'I know no one who speaks my word except a man in Antioch. Go to him, and if you meet him, convey my greetings of peace to him and deliver this tablet to him.' He handed me a tablet. When he died, I washed him, shrouded him, and buried him. I took the tablet and traveled to Antioch, seeking the hermitage. I approached saying: 'I bear witness that there is no deity except God, and that Jesus is the Spirit of God, and that Muhammad is the Beloved of God.' The dweller looked down at me and said: 'Are you Rozaba?' I said: 'Yes.'
