When he placed them before him, he said to some Christian scholars: "How can we recognize the wood of the Messiah?" One said to him: "Bring three dead men; place a corpse upon each piece of wood. The dead man on the wood of Lord Messiah will stand upright as if alive, while the two on the thieves' wood will fall to the ground." He ordered three dead men be exhumed and brought before him, and did as the scholar said. When he lifted them upon the wood, the two on the thieves' wood fell, and the dead man on the wood of the one who resembled the Messiah stood upright as if alive. Thus the wood was recognized.

(383) A traditional report also states: Lord Messiah—exalted be his glory—rose from the grave after three days and revived the dead. When they witnessed this act of his—among others we have not cited—and claimed for him what they claimed, God—the Sublime and Exalted—sent down: {They have certainly disbelieved who say, "God is the Messiah, the son of Mary"...}1. There are two aspects to this statement:

He disbelieved who said God is the Messiah son of Mary al-Majdalaniyya—who is the Informed One previously mentioned.

They have certainly disbelieved who say God is the Messiah son of Mary, the Worshipped Lord, meaning He is the Meaning in reality and the Goal, and that he is not a Name for the Meaning, and that there is no goal above him. Rather, whoever says he is a Name for the Meaning has affirmed Oneness and is correct. Whoever says he and the Meaning are equal in pre-eternity and divinity has strayed, erring and fabricating. He—exalted be his glory—said of himself: {and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad}2, thus negating the divinity they claimed for him. And His word: {Never would the Messiah disdain to be a servant of God, nor would the angels near [to Him]...}3. The part "{And whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant}" refers to the Second—may God curse him—and whoever claimed what he claimed among his personages. The "angels near" here are the Gates—peace be upon them.
