He only named him 'Reason' (Aql) because He named him, commanded him, and forbade him. He is a 'reason' from Him and a 'tongue,' because he heard from Allah. He named him Reason because he understood (aqala) from his Meaning. He is the one who conveys on His behalf because the Meaning, Exalted and Sanctified, speaks through him; thus He is a God for him. He is His Throne (Arsh) because He established the reality of Gnosis in the hearts of the believers who know by the radiance of his light. He is His Place (Makan) because He enabled (makkana) the world to know their Creator, guided them to Him, and directed them toward Him. Thus, the Meaning is the Producer of Existence (al-Mukawwin) and the Name is the Place (al-Makan). The Meaning is independent of the Place, while the Place is in need of Him. The entire world, both upper and lower, is compelled and in need of the Place to enable them and bring them to the knowledge of the Pre-eternal Creator, the Producer of Existence."
The Station of the Name in Relation to its Creator
Whoever says that the Master Muhammad—who is the Greatest Name and the Ancient Veil—is a produced being like other produced beings or a created thing like other created things, has erred, gone astray, and fabricated a lie. For the Meaning, Exalted is He, brought him forth from the light of His Essence, manifested him, and displayed him, making him the locus of His names and attributes and the first of His veils and stations.
Rather, I say: his station in relation to his Creator is a station known to none but the "Mim," may His might be glorified, and none encompasses it except his Master, the Pre-eternal and Ancient. Since the matter is thus, can the "Gate" (al-Bab) or those below him among the people of ranks and means encompass it? This is supported by the words of the Exalted: {And they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great} (Al-Baqarah: 255). Thus, "Knowledge" is the Master Muhammad, the Name. I have shortened the answer for you, fearing you might weary of excessive prolixity, for the discourse on this is vast and the description is great and wide.
