The Meaning manifested in His Essence as Joseph—exalted be His Name—not through a name or attribute. The Gate was manifest as the aforementioned Ham. The Name was manifest through two persons: Jacob and al-Rayyan (the Aziz of Egypt) son of Duf', the master of the pyramids; his biography is great and [so is] what he manifested. Jacob had eleven sons just as Abd al-Muttalib (who is also the Name) had, even if their names and attributes changed.

A group of the monotheists related: "The Gate was Benjamin, Joseph's brother from Jacob and Rachel. The Adversary was manifest as Imlaq the Compeller and his minister Amaliq. Rachel, the mother of Joseph, is Fatima bint Asad."

Al-Khasibi—may God sanctify his soul—said: The "Pit" (al-jubb) is also Fatima bint Asad, due to the location of the Meaning's manifestation from her and what was claimed regarding that. Benjamin is Ja'far al-Tayyar in the Hashemite Cycle, who "flew" with Knowledge. Daniya, daughter of Jacob, is Fakhita (Umm Hani) in the Hashemite Cycle. The "Cup" (al-sa') is the person of the Gate, in which the sciences of God—the Mighty and Sublime—are measured.

The meaning of the words of Joseph's brothers to Jacob—exalted be his glory: {Send him with us tomorrow that he may graze and play, and indeed, we will be his guardians}1. This was because Jacob used to magnify Joseph for what he manifested and preferred him over his brothers; yet he did not say to his children: "This is the Meaning, my God and your God, so worship him." They said "Send him"—meaning: send his tongue with our tongues. The "Grazer" (al-ra'i) is the station of nourishment, which is Knowledge.

{And indeed, we are to him sincere advisors}2—meaning: if he is our God, we advise him regarding preservation and we have recognized him; and if he is as one of us, we have recognized him. And His word: {So when they took him away and agreed to put him into the bottom of the pit... and We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [at last] of this affair of theirs while they do not perceive."}3
