[Noah] said, "There is no protector today from the decree of God, except for whom He gives mercy." And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned.}1
The "mountain" to which he pointed is the First. The meaning of "drowning" is drowning in sins, crimes, and trials. Japheth was cast to the First, who tempted him. Noah said: {And Noah called to his Lord and said, "My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and indeed, Your promise is true; and You are the most just of judges!" He said, "O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [a person of] unrighteous work, so do not ask Me for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant."}2
The work which was his work was his opposition to Noah and his seeking refuge on the mountain—who is the Adversary. It is related that the Adversary was manifest in the time of Noah as al-Darmatheel. Whenever you find in the Book of God a straying or fabricating king, he is the First, and his minister is the Second—may God curse them both.
In the report of the Iraqis: Noah's Oneness in the Ark and his indication were toward his son Shem; he used to say to him: "O Cause of causes and Originator of the first movements." Shem would reply: "By my eye it flows and by my eye it anchors." The eighty who rode in the Ark were forty men and forty women. It is related they were made sterile; none of them produced a child, nor did any female among them conceive. The entire world [today] is from the children of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. By my son Haydara—may God have mercy on him:
