The philosophers said: "The Hyle (al-Hayula) is the root of all things." To me, that is the Lord Mim, who is the Great Name; he is the root of things, and the Meaning is his Root and his Pre-eternity. Others said: "The Ionic Sphere1 is that which brought things into existence and originated them." To me, that is the Lord Mim—exalted be his glory—and the Ain is the one who originated and produced him. Another group said: "Heat is that which produced things and performed them." To me, that is the Lord Mim, and his Master is the one who produced him.
(349) It has been related that Lord Messiah—exalted be his glory—passed by a crucified man. When he looked at him, he said to the disciples: "I created the world in the image of the Lord."
There are several aspects regarding the naming of the Messiah:
It has been said that the Messiah was named al-Masih because, through a Name and an Attribute, he "anointed" (masaha) the world with Names and Attributes, and he anointed himself with a Name and an Attribute. Others said: He was "wiped" (mamsuh), possessing neither what men have nor what women have. Others said: He was named the Messiah because in everything there is an "anointment" from him. Others said: He was named the Messiah because he "wiped" (encompassed) the heavens and the earth. Others said: He was named the Messiah because he used to wipe every afflicted person with his hand and heal them.
(350) It is related that when our lord Abu al-Khattab Muhammad ibn Ismail—peace be upon him—proclaimed from atop the minaret of the Great Mosque in Kufa, he said: "I am the God deified by Divinity (al-Ma’luh bi-al-Ilahiyya)," meaning: I am a God through a God.
