Then the Pre-eternal Ancient willed to originate the creation by His intent and judgment. He transfigured to them in His Essence and said: "Am I not your Lord?" They said: "Yes." The Name was ancient by the Light during that duration which time cannot reach nor number count, because he is ancient by the pre-eternity of his Master, the Pre-eternal, though not equal to his Meaning. Rather, the Meaning is his Master, his Originator, his God, and his Creator. If He wills to honor and elevate him, He vanishes him beneath the shimmer of the light of His Essence and manifests in the likeness of his form without cessation or transition.
From Abu al-Fath—may God have mercy on him: I asked my Master Sheikh Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Jali—may God sanctify his subtle essence—regarding his statement in the epistle The Splitting and the Massing: "The Name is ancient by the Light, originated by the Manifestation." Is the one "ancient by the Light" the Name whom the Meaning invented from the light of His Essence—he being the one "originated by the Manifestation"—or is it the luminous body by which the Name was personified? He answered: "This one, ancient by the Light and originated by the Manifestation, is the soul of the Mim which the Pre-eternal split from His mass, moved from His stillness, and invented from the light of His Essence. It is that which claims itself and by which the Name 'God' (Allah) is called. He is the Unique One, and his Master is the One (al-Ahad)."
As for the body by which the Name appeared, it is created from a light other than the light of the Essence, and from it comes the soul of the Sin. When the Lord Mim appeared in the Mosaic Cycle, he asked the Meaning—Exalted—for the Vision, as recorded in the Magnificent Quran. [God] said: "You will not see Me, but look at the mountain." The mountain is the body of Moses; the form in which he appeared in humanity is a created light. When the Meaning—glory be to His majesty—transfigured, the created thing vanished, as God the Almighty said: {And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You."
