Just as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: {As for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance} (Fussilat: 17). And His saying, Mighty and Majestic: {And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light} (Al-Nur: 40). And His saying, Mighty and Majestic: {Is he who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which to walk among the people like one whose likeness is in darkness, from which he cannot emerge?} (Al-An'am: 122).
(13) And from him, from his men, from al-Alim, may His might be glorified, having been asked about the quantity of reason. He said: "Nothing has ever contained it such that its measure could be known, nor has it ever been completed in one place such that its quantity could be calculated. Rather, each individual partakes of it according to their purity and their attentiveness to it, just as every animal takes from the air through its breath according to its strength and the extent of its capacity; the tiny ant takes from it according to its strength, and the elephant takes from it according to its strength."
(14) And from the trustworthy Sheikh Abi al-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Jali, may Allah sanctify his soul, by his chain of transmission to al-Alim, may His might be glorified, having been asked about the location of reason. He said: "It is in everything, and nothing is outside of it. Its origin is from a light that is never extinguished, a source that is never exhausted, and an element that cannot be numbered. If it is within that which is low, it is also in the high; it is neither divided nor partitioned."
(15) And from him, from his men, from our Master Muhammad, may His might be glorified, having been asked about the beginning of reason. He said: "It is in Allah without a beginning, and in creation with a beginning. It is more vast than space, for it is a subtle radiance from the Great Light."
