(315) From Muhammad ibn Sinan, from Abu Harun al-Basir—peace be upon them both—who said: I entered upon my Master al-Sadiq—exalted be his glory—and he said to me: "O Abu Harun." I replied: "At your service, O my lord." He said: "Whoever seeks God the One (al-Ahad), the Meaning who has no opposite—then I am He. And whoever seeks a sincere Name I created with My hand—then that is Muhammad. Whoever meets Me with the knowledge of him, I shall settle him in My gardens; but whoever comes to Me without knowledge of him, I shall punish him with a painful torment." Abu Harun said: I replied: "O my lord, 'God' (Allah) is a name, and You are God the Meaning who has never ceased and will never cease; no name, attribute, or likeness falls upon You?" He replied: "You have spoken the truth, O Abu Harun, for you are a truthful one. I am God above all things and nothing is with Me; Muhammad is My servant established by My justice (qisti)." I asked: "O my Master, what is the meaning of Your justice?" He said: "The knowledge of Me."
(316) From our Master Abu Abd Allah al-Sadiq—exalted be his glory: "Whoever worships the Namer has worshipped through the reality of the Meaning."1
(317) From him: "Whoever has not purified the Name from the Namer, and the Attribute from the Described, has worshipped nothing."
(318) By the same chain from him, he said to Yunus ibn Zabyan—peace be upon him: "I have sworn that I shall only permit My Paradise to him who recognized Me, affirmed My Oneness, and purified My Name from Me. For the Name is a matter of difference, while the Meaning is self-subsisting, and names are but expressions."
