The mentioned man was renowned for bravery since the Age of Ignorance, counted as equal to a thousand men; and Amr at that time was counted as equal to ten such men. Amr is, to us, the essence of the Adversary—may God curse him. This is supported by the words of the Mighty and Sublime: {This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you... And whoever denies Faith, his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers}.1
Faith is our Master—exalted be his glory—and whoever disbelieves in Him, his work is worthless, as the Mighty and Sublime said: {Indeed, God does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with God has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin}.2
What we mentioned regarding Amr is supported by the narration of the reliable sheikh Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Jali—may God sanctify his soul—who said: When the Name manifested in the Hashemite Cycle through five persons, the second Adversary—may God curse him—was manifest through five persons: (Umar, Amr ibn Abd Wudd al-Amiri, Abu Jahl [Umar ibn Hisham], Suraqa ibn Malik, and Aisha). As for the saying of the Lord Mim—exalted be his glory: "Faith in its entirety has emerged to face Shirk in its entirety," referring to Amr ibn Wudd, it means he manifested from these five; they are the second Adversary and the sum of Shirk. The Lord Messenger also named Him: The Guide (al-Hadi). By this he indicated Him, saying: "Ali is the Guide." God the Mighty and Sublime said: {Say: 'Is there of your partners any who guides to the truth?' Say: 'God guides to the truth. Is He who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed or he who guides not unless he is guided? Then what is [wrong] with you—how do you judge?'}3
