(276) Our Master al-Sadiq—exalted be his glory—was asked regarding this verse and said: "The Shade here is the Meaning; that is, Moses returned to his Meaning and became in need of Him. The Name is never in need except toward his Meaning, not toward any other thing. So he took refuge in Him because He is his Lord, the one powerful over him, the High, the Great, the Benefactor toward him—while Moses is His servant, in need of Him."
Every "shade" mentioned in the Book of God the Almighty is praiseworthy, such as the word of the Mighty and Sublime: {And the companions of the right—what are the companions of the right? [They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed, and stalks of bananas, and shade extended, and water poured forth, and fruit, abundant, neither limited nor forbidden, and raised couches. Indeed, We have produced them in a [new] creation and made them virgins, devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age, for the companions of the right—a large company of the former [peoples] and a large company of the later [peoples].}1
Except for two shades, one of which is the word of the Almighty: {Proceed to a shadow having three columns, [which offers] no cool shade and avails not against the flame. Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress, as if they were yellowish camels. Woe, that Day, to the deniers. This is a Day they will not speak, nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse. Woe, that Day, to the deniers.}2
This specific shade is Aisha. The "camels" are Talha, Marwan, Amr ibn al-Aas, and their likes. Aisha is the Humayra and the Sufayra; they are the Evil Eyes whom the Messenger of God—exalted be his glory—cursed.
