And the saying of our lord the Messenger—exalted be his glory—in the outward sense: 'Gabriel informed me from my Lord, the High, the Most High,' and His word—the Mighty and Sublime—at the end of the Verse of the Throne: {And He is the High, the Great}1.
It was recorded in another place: {And He is the High, the Great}2. He was also named the One of vast knowledge (al-Anza' al-Batin):
A group among the scholars of Hadith said: Anza' (freed) from shirk, Batin (full) of knowledge.
The Elite said: Batin (Inward) in Essence, Anza' (distinct) from attributes. Another aspect: Batin (hidden) within the nations, Anza' (separated) from father and child.
The Quraysh named him: the Egg of the Valley, intending thereby "equilibrium," for an egg has no crookedness. Another group related: He was the firmest man in Mecca, just as an egg cannot be broken unless crushed.
The Arabs named him: the Bald One of Quraysh. A group among the theologians held that "the Bald One of Quraysh" meant: the purest house in Quraysh. This is because the completion of the pilgrim's purity is the shaving of the head, and one does not enter the House except as God the Almighty commanded: {shaving your heads and shortening [your hair], not fearing}. Thus they intended the purest house in Quraysh.
Others said: rather, he is the Scholar of Quraysh. In the time of the Arabs, the scholar used to shave his head while others kept their hair, so that he might be recognized among them by his shaved head. Our Master—exalted be his glory—was the scholar of the Arabs in his time and the scholar of Quraysh3.
