He answered: "If God wills to hide the Name, He vanishes him beneath the shimmer of the light of His Essence, meaning: He veils him from the higher and lower worlds and strips him of his luminous body that appeared as a mortal. Thus the Name becomes as he was at the beginning of his affair before. The Meaning then manifests to the People of Intermingling in their own form. As for the People of Purity: His manifestation is veiled by the light of the Essence of God; He has not ceased from His being, even if He manifested to the sight."

This is the most healing of answers in this sense and the highest. As for the names of the Meaning—glory be to Him—in various languages and in the precise verses affirmed by the People of Knowledge and Proof:

I asked my Master and sheikh Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Baghdadi—may God raise his rank—regarding the names of our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory—in various different languages? He answered me—may God be pleased with him—saying: "O my son—may God grant you success in His knowledge and obedience, and support us and you with His success. You asked me regarding the names of the Meaning—exalted be His bounties and majestic be His names—in various different languages. I mention to you what has reached my knowledge, what I learned from my sheikhs, what my understanding reached, and what God granted of His knowledge; to Him belongs the praise and favor for that. If there is a word of error in what I mention, it is from me; what is of truth is by the success granted by God the Almighty. I am not a scholar of my age, but a follower, not an innovator:

As for the names of the Meaning—exalted be his glory—this is their summary. The Arabs named him: Ali. It is said that from the time of Adam until the time of Muhammad, no one was named Ali except Him. it is derived from highness (al-uluw), as in your saying: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.'
