"The sound realization concerning the manifestations of the Pre-eternal—Exalted—is that His manifestations are entirely Essential; the People of Purity know this. When the Meaning wills to hide the Name, He vanishes him beneath the shimmer of the light of His Essence, overwhelming and concealing him, and manifests in the likeness of his form. This is an inward matter; its inwardness is greater than what preceded it, and beyond it there is no end. It is that the Pre-eternal has not ceased from His being, even if He manifested to the sight. Rather, it is the hearts and sights that vanished and were overturned, seeing occultation and manifestation, veiling and presence. All of creation, at the time when the Lord vanishes the Name and manifests in the likeness of his form, falls into three types: first, the People of Purity; second, the People of Intermingling (al-Mamzujin) with Purity; and third, the People of Turbidity.
As for the People of Purity: they know at that moment that their Master has not ceased from His being, even if He manifested to the sight, and that He has neither transformed nor become hidden; He is He, without cessation or transition, and they do not see Him moving from state to state.
As for the People of Intermingling with Purity: they say and imagine that He manifested in the likeness of the Veil's form as an honor to him; this is the mentioned middle station.
As for the People of Turbidity: both states are veiled from them; they see the Meaning as one of them, a mortal like themselves."
What we also related by his chain in this section from the Sheikh Abu Sa'id Maymun al-Tabarani—may God illuminate his person—who said: I asked my lord al-Jali—may God sanctify his soul: "What is the meaning of the statement in his answer that 'He vanished him beneath the shimmer of the light of His Essence'—how is this vanishing? And his saying: 'an inward whose inwardness is greater than what preceded'—what are these two inwardnesses?"
