There shall be strife1 between him and his kinsmen; they shall speak his word and bear witness to his testimony. He shall leave among them a successor and leave among them a light. They shall spring upon that man whom he leaves among them, fighting him and striking his face with the sword. Wretched and overturned is he who fights him, and woe, utter woe, to whoever opposes him. He who supports him and fights with him has succeeded and triumphed.'" Then he said to the monk: "O monk, is it thus in the book?" The monk replied: "O my Master, this is exactly as it is in the book without the addition or omission of a single word." At that, our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory—said: "Praise be to God, for the prophets have mentioned us in their books and the successors in their records and writings." The monk asked: "And are you that man?" He replied: "Yes."
The monk said: "The author of this book performed a specific deed here and manifested a sign." Our Master—exalted be His mention—replied to him: "O Imran, it is for that very reason we have stopped for you." He spoke with him at length until the sun set. His companions said to him: "O Amir Almuminin, the sun has set and we have not prayed the afternoon prayer (Asr)." Our Master signaled to it as it had nearly vanished and said: "O Gazelle!" She replied: "At your service, at your service, O Amir Almuminin, command me as You will," in a voice heard by the entire army. He said to her: "Return to the time of your afternoon." She returned to the time of the afternoon, white and pure. He prayed the afternoon prayer with them, and then it set. That monk descended to him, saying: "I bear witness that there is no god but God alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and that my Master Ali is Amir Almuminin." He embraced Islam at the hands of our Master; his Islam was sincere, and he marched before our Master to Siffin, where he was killed alongside Uwais al-Qarani and Dihya al-Qarani—peace be upon them. These three were the devotees of the Arabs, killed by the people of Sham, the Transgressing Party.
