Our Master—exalted be his glory—said to them: "If God the Almighty has revived them as He willed, the matter is His; He does what He wills and judges as He intends." For Him—exalted be His mention—there are many such powers and terrestrial signs that cannot be counted. We have limited ourselves to what we mentioned as a clarification and a warning for whoever comes across it; it is a small portion of many. As for the celestial signs:
(255) Among them is what is famous and recorded, to which the Biography bears witness regarding the Quraysh, who said to the Messenger of God—exalted be his glory—while he was in Mecca on one of the nights when the moon had risen full: "O Muhammad, is this moon your Lord?" He said: "No." They asked: "Are you its Lord?" He said: "No." They asked: "Does your command apply to it?" He said: "Yes, by the command of my Lord." They said: "Then split this moon into two halves for us so we may know you are a prophet." The Prophet—exalted be his glory—said to our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory: "Arise, O Ali, and do that." Our Master—exalted be his glory—stood and pointed to the moon with his finger; the moon split into two halves. All the people of Mecca saw that and witnessed the mark of the finger of our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory—in the moon where it had split. One piece fell upon al-Safa and one piece upon al-Marwa. Then he said to it: "Return as you were." The two pieces returned and fused together while the people watched until they joined in the sky and it became full once again. Abu Jahl—may God curse him—said: "O Muhammad, this is a continuous sorcery."
God, the Mighty and Sublime, sent down: {The Hour has come near, and the moon has split. And if they see a sign, they turn away and say, "Passing sorcery." And they denied and followed their desires, and every matter is settled. And there has already come to them of the news that which contains a deterrent—extensive wisdom; but the warnings do not avail. So turn away from them. The Day the Caller calls to a thing unknown.}1
