Cursed were the companions of the trench—the fire of abundant fuel—when they were sitting by it, and they were witnesses to what they were doing to the believers. And they resented them not except because they believed in God, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy—to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And God is a Witness over all things. Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire. Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment. Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe. Indeed, it is He who begins [creation] and repeats [it]. And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate, Honorable Owner of the Throne, Effecter of what He intends.}1 to the end of the Surah.
Malik al-Ashtar al-Nakha'i—peace be upon him—said to him: "O Amir Almuminin, I saw you reciting this Surah over them and pointing toward them; yet this was revealed during the era of the Messenger of God—exalted be his glory?" Our Master—exalted be his glory—replied: "That was its revelation (tanzil), and this is its interpretation (ta'wil)."
Then our Master recited fifty-five takbirs over them. It was asked of him: "Why is that?" He said: "Are they not eleven men? For each dead person, five takbirs." When they were buried and covered, the people of Kufa woke the next day to find them sitting at the doors of their houses, wrapped in green cloaks, walking in the markets and paths. The people of Kufa came to our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be His praise.
They said to him: "Indeed, Abd Allah ibn Saba and his companions—blessings of God be upon them—are wearing green cloaks, in their shops and houses, walking in the markets and paths with us."
