(248) Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zayd al-Razi narrated to me, saying: The Lord Abu Abd Allah al-Khasibi—may God ennoble his station—narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Hasani—peace be upon him—narrated to me, saying: Our lord Abu Shu'ayb Muhammad al-Numayri—peace be upon him—narrated to me that when the Jews of Khaybar came to the Messenger of God—exalted be his glory—numbering forty men including a judge among their scholars to debate him, they stopped outside Medina at the end of the day to enter upon him the next morning. The Messenger—exalted be his glory—sent them food and drink with Bilal ibn Rabah al-Shanawi—peace be upon him—ordering him to eat with them. The Jews ate of the food he brought and drank of the drink, and they died where they were that night; by morning, every last one of them was dead.

Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Salul the hypocrite—may God curse him—and the hypocrites said: "When Muhammad knew that those coming from Khaybar would overcome him with proof and invalidate what he holds, he poisoned them in the food he sent and killed them." Bilal said to them: "By God, the Messenger of God ordered me to eat with them of the food and drink of the drink I brought, and I did so." They paid no heed to Bilal's words and persisted in their hypocrisy and heinous speech. The news reached our lord the Messenger—exalted be his glory—and he said to our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory: "O Ali, go out to the outskirts of Medina and revive them so they may inform who killed them." Our Master—exalted be his glory—went out to the outskirts of Medina, and the people of Medina went out with him entirely—men, women, and children. Our Master—exalted be his glory—stood over the gathering of dead Jews, took water in his mouth, sprayed it over them, and cried out: "O assembly of Jews, speak by the permission of God, the High, the Great."

They arose by the permission of God, bearing witness. He brought them to the Messenger of God, who said to them: "Do you choose life or death?" They said: "Life." So he granted them a term of forty years. They believed in God and His Messenger, married, and had children who were called "the children of the dead." The polytheists were bewildered by this and said: "Muhammad's sorcery has reached the point of reviving the dead."
