The Prophet—exalted be his glory—said to them: "If He does that, what will you do?" They said: "We shall believe in you, O Muhammad." The Messenger of God—exalted be his glory—said: "Mark a sign upon the two mountains." So the Quraysh marked the base of the two mountains and measured their width. At that, the Prophet—exalted be his glory—said to our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory: "O Ali, arise and widen the valley for them." Our Master Amir Almuminin stood in the center of the valley, joined his palms, and spread his hands; he began to open the right and the left, and the two mountains separated and shook until the distance was complete. Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory—sat down and said to them: "Measure the width of the two mountains." They measured them and found they had widened by one hundred and sixty cubits. Abu Jahl—may God curse him—said: "O Muhammad, Ali has surpassed you in sorcery." Then our Master—exalted be his glory—joined his hands just as he had opened them, and the two mountains returned to their previous states. God sent down concerning this His word, the Mighty and Sublime: {And if there was a Quran by which mountains were moved or the earth was cloven or the dead were made to speak... but to God belongs the affair entirely. Have those who believed not yet known that had God willed, He would have guided all people? And those who disbelieve do not cease to be struck, for what they have done, by calamity, or it settles close to their home until the promise of God comes. Indeed, God does not fail in His promise.}1
(245) Hammud al-Misri narrated to me, saying: The Lord Abu Abd Allah al-Khasibi—may God ennoble his station—narrated to me: Our Master Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory—passed by Babylon and said to Qays ibn Sa'd ibn Ubada al-Khazraji—peace be upon him: "O Qays, enter this cave and bring out what you find beneath the round black rock at the furthest end of the cave."
