And the words of the Mighty and Sublime: {And God has said, "Do not take for yourselves two deities. He is only one God, so fear only Me"}.1

This is pure Oneness itself. The Meaning—glory be to Him—is silent in the line of Prophecy, while the Name is speaking, pointing to Him and calling to Him. In the line of the Imamate, the Name is silent while the Meaning is speaking, pointing to His Essence and declaring His divinity.

Even if He—Exalted—manifests in the form of the Name, the people of insight know that all His manifestations are Essential and of vast knowledge. If He turns the sights in seeing Him, the cause is in the observer, not in the One observed. Whoever worships the Name and the Meaning has associated partners; whoever worships the Name without the Meaning has disbelieved; and whoever worships the Meaning in its Essence has attained the correct worship. These are the companions of Amir Almuminin; whether they call upon Him on land or at sea, He answers them.

(209) Thus I have related it from my sheikhs—may God be pleased with them—and I have believed it through my reliable sources. Among those is what I related through a sound chain of transmission from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from Yunus ibn Zabyan—peace be upon them both—who said: I heard our Master al-Sadiq—exalted be his glory—saying: "Whoever claims to know God through the imagination of hearts has negated the Worshipped; whoever claims He is not seen has pointed to an absent one; whoever claims to worship the Name without the Meaning has committed to disbelief, for the Name is originated; whoever claims to worship the Name and the Meaning together has assigned a partner to God; but whoever claims to worship the Meaning through the reality of knowledge, those are the companions of Amir Almuminin who answer Him on land and at sea."
