In this saying, the Sage gathered the Cause of the Beginning and the End, and the Quiddity of that Thing from whose origin things came to be.

He is the Deity who Willed; and by His Will was the Intellect (Al-'Aql), which is the Veil. And by the Will of the Intellect was the Simple Soul (Al-Nafs al-Basita), which is truly the Gate. And from the Soul—which is the Gate—were the Singular Natures (Al-Taba'i' al-Mufrada) and the High Figures, from which the Compound Natures were generated.

Indeed, a thing is not known except by what is above it.

The Soul is above Nature, and by it, Nature is known.

The Intellect is above the Soul, and by it, the Soul is known.

And the Intellect and the Existents are known by the Singular Deity, whose Power is majestic, and the grasping of His Quiddity is impossible.

And since the saying has preceded that a thing is not known except by what is above it, and the highest thing within us is the Intellect, and Allah the Almighty is above the Intellect:

It is therefore obligatory that we do not grasp His Quiddity except by:

Believing in the Necessity of His Existence (Wujub Wujudihi).

Inferring Him by what exists.

Excluding Him (Majestic be His Praise) from being encompassed or His Quiddity being known.
