Nor let what I mentioned appear too great to him, nor what I indicated seem too momentous in his soul, thus hastening to deny it without knowledge to rely upon, nor proof to depend upon.
For by the One—there is no god but Him—the Creator of all things: Were it not for the fear of excess and my knowledge of the inadequacy of minds to grasp Realities in their true aspect, I would have presented to this group, from this Art (Fann) which alerts to happiness in the Hereafter, that to which none is guided except every possessor of a piercing core (Lubb Thaqib) and correct opinion.
But I act as it was said:
"Be gentle with your brother, for he cannot bear what you have been made to bear."
And indeed, only two states have compelled me to present what I have presented and to speak at length upon it:
The First: That every possessor of knowledge, pure of mind, and good in religiosity might yearn for it, desiring the reward, joy, pleasure, and permanent good that never ceases, which is with Allah.
And the Second: As a deterrence to the fools and a rebuke to the ignorant who put themselves forward in gatherings, and speak on issues they do not know and Realities they do not perceive, thereby destroying their own souls and the souls of the weak novices seeking the Religion.
