And Allah the Almighty has said:

{O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated.}1

And Intoxication (Sukr) is heedlessness and ignorance.

So He commanded the stripping (Tajrid) of the soul from its attachments and cutting it off from its preoccupations, so that it may be prepared and ready to accept the Gifts of Allah.

This is because the one praying, when he makes his soul present during the Remembrance (Dhikr) of Allah’s Majesty, Dominion, Greatness, and Authority; And looks at the High Ranks, rank after rank; And sanctifies (Nazaha) Allah, exalts Him, and magnifies Him above the Gate-Rank (Al-Rutba al-Babiyya)—which is the Station of the Universal Soul and the Divine Word;

[Then] he ascends to the Rank of the Supreme Veil, which is the Station of the Universal Intellect.

At that point, he observes proper etiquette and stands the standing of the Gnostic connected to Allah, witnessing the majesty of His Dominion and the greatness of His Authority.

Thus, he becomes one praying in Reality, connected to Allah according to the measure of his capacity. And his acquisition from the gleams of Lights and Holy Gifts increases according to the power of his intellect and the readiness of his soul.

1Surah An-Nisa, Verse 43. Our Master the Commander of the Faithful (Exalted be His Might) said regarding His saying "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying or in a state of janabah, except those passing through":"As for the Prayer, it is the Remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). As for Intoxication, it is the occupation of the heart with other than Him (Blessed and Exalted). As for Purity (Tahara), it is from the antagonists, the opponents, and the rivals."
