We said: "Inform us about the Divine Nature (Lahut) and what applies to it, since it is a Luminous Inner-Reality (Batin Nurani)1.

He said: "The name ‘Allah’ applies to it."

We said: "Do the letters apply to it?"

He said: "No; because letters are originated (Muhdatha), and because of [misunderstanding] them, those who went astray, went astray."

We said: "Upon whom then do the letters apply?"

He said: "They apply to His Wali (Vicegerent/Guardian), because He bestowed upon him the Names and Attributes; and because Allah, in His inner-reality, is an unperceivable Mystery (Ghayb), while His Wali is a manifest, perceivable Light. Thus, the manifest letters apply to the person of Muhammad. Thus, Muhammad is the Name of Allah, His Soul, and His Form. The letters of Muhammad apply to His Wali (Guardian/Vicegerent), Salsal; and Muhammad and His Wali are both manifest and perceivable.

The Divine Nature (Lahut) is the Meaning (Al-Ma'na) manifest through the Goal (Al-Ghaya), and the Goal is the Ancient Eternity (Al Azal al-Qadim).

Footnotes

1In glorification of the Master "M" (the Meem), the manifest letters of His name apply to His Wali, the "S" (the Seen). Here, one must mention "The Light and the Radiance" (Al-Nur wa al-Diya) to understand the indication of the Names.[Imam] al-Sadiq (Peace be upon him) said: "As for the believers, they do not see us as a form, but they see us as Light and Power." (The 'seeing' here is of the heart). The Master Abu Shu’ayb (Peace be upon him) said: "He appeared to the materialists as a human body, but the Gnostics see Him in His inner-depths as a radiant Light and a Universal Meaning (Ma’na Kulli)."[Imam] al-Sadiq (Peace be upon him) said: "The Eternal (Exalted is He) established the 'Name' among His creation in His stead. He made obedience to it, prostration to it, and supplication to it [mandatory]. The names applicable to Him, He applied to it [the Name], and it stands in the place of Allah as a representation (Tamthilan)..."
