Indeed, the Supreme Veil of Allah—which has no difference nor separation from its Initiator (Mubdi') and Originator (Munshi')—is the First Intellect1.

[He is] encompassing the whole in strength, power, greatness, majesty, grandeur, and awe. He is the Originator of Existence, and to him is the end of the world.

He is not a body, nor does he indwell in a body, nor does he fall under description, nor does thought or illusion encompass him.

Nor is he measured, nor represented, nor does Time encompass him, nor does a moment restrict him. Nor does alteration, change, or corruption enter upon him.

[He is] subsisting by the Divine Strength, Power, and Greatness. Emanating from his essence are the rest of the essences, from the Innovator of the All.

So his essence is not limited, nor counted, nor described, nor qualified by any quality.

And He is of Existence within every existent, not by way of restriction nor encompassment, but by way of Subtlety (Lutf).

Footnotes

1Narrated from the Scholar (Al-'Alim)—Exalted be His Might—that he was asked about the Intellect, so he said:"He is the Master Manifest by that Blossoming Light. The First invented him from the Light of His Essence, confided in him, and addressed him.He said to him: 'Come forward,' so he came forward. Then He said to him: 'Go back,' so he went back. Then He said: 'By My Might and Majesty, I have not created a creation closer to Me than you. By you I opened My closed mass (Ratqi), by you I manifested My creation, and by you I took My covenant upon them. To you belongs praise. By you I give, by you I judge, and by you I decree. He has not reached Me who denied you, nor is he veiled from Me who knew you. I am pleased with you as a Lord for the worlds, and by My judgment, a Manager among them.'
