He, the Most Glorious of Speakers, said: {He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.}1 And this class of people is the one intended. It is the one that takes, from between the sweet, fresh water and the salty, bitter water, the pearl and the coral.
Our Masters have alerted and pointed to the depth of their speech, and they said:
From al-Mufaddal ibn 'Umar (from him is peace), my Master, Abu 'Abdillah (may his glory be exalted), said: "Indeed, for each one of us, there is an outer and an inner. His outer is a ruling, and his inner is profound. Our speech (Hadith) is difficult, hard to bear, and our affair is a deeply hidden secret. So whoever knows our nuance knows what we intended, and whoever does not know the allusion will not benefit from the explicit statement."2
So the outer and the inner are the salty and the fresh, they are the treasure and the wall, and they are the remnants and the traces...
They (may their glory be exalted) have declared that their speech (Hadith) possesses facets that are difficult for a person to grasp and fully encompass.
From Muhammad ibn Sinan (upon him is peace), he said: Our Master Assadiq (may his glory be exalted) was asked about their speech, and he said: "Indeed, we speak a word, and it has seventy facets." It was said: "Seventy?" He said: "Seven hundred." He said: "Seven hundred?" He said: "Seven thousand." Then the questioner fell silent, and had he asked for more, he would have been given more.3
