Our Mistress Umm Kulthūm (may her glory be exalted) said to the people of Kūfah: "Silence, O people of Kūfah! Your men kill us, and your women weep over us! The Judge between us and you is Allah on the Day of Decisive Judgment. O people of Kūfah, woe to you! Why did you abandon Ḥusayn, kill him, plunder his property, take his women captive, and afflict him? So, woe and destruction to you! Woe to you! Do you know what calamities have befallen you, what burden you have carried on your backs, what blood you have shed, what noble one you have afflicted, what little girl you have surrendered, and what wealth you have plundered? You killed the best of men after the Prophet, and mercy was plucked from your hearts. Indeed, the party of Allah are the successful, and the party of Satan are the losers." Then the people burst into weeping, the women uncovered their hair, scratched their faces, slapped their cheeks, and called for destruction and doom. No one saw more weeping that day.1

You uncovered your hair, and scratched your faces, and slapped your cheeks, O you among whom treachery is ancient!

Our Mistress Zaynab bint ‘Alī (may her glory be exalted), while addressing the crowd that met her with weeping and wailing, said, rebuking them: "Do you weep and wail?! Yes, by Allah, weep much and laugh little, for you have incurred the shame and disgrace, and you will never cleanse it with washing thereafter. How will you cleanse the killing of the descendant of the Seal of Prophethood?"2

Glorious is Your majesty, O my Mistress! It is as if your words, "Yes, by Allah, weep much," meant nothing but the Ḥusayniyyahs and by them you intended nothing but the establishment of mourning rituals, and the slapping of faces and the tearing of heads, backs, and chests. My Mistress, glorious is Your majesty beyond the description of the oppressors and the speech of the rumor-mongers who thought in their ignorance that you were taken captive on the backs of weak animals and were among those chained in shackles and iron. Oh, oh, my Mistress! If they saw you on the Throne with ‘Alī and his Family (may their glory be exalted all together), laughing at the weakness of these faithless curs and at their brothers among the Negligent claimants, claimants of love without purification and support.
