Reflect upon their words. By Allah, they are like the claims of the Negligent today and like their abandonment. Their failure to support him continued throughout the rule of his enemies who took power, and the people accepted them, except for a few of his followers.

Although their negligence in supporting Amir Al-Mouminine during this period was sufficient to punish them, they did not stop there, but rather rebelled against him and apostatized from their allegiance to him.

The first aggression and hostility from the Negligent was their emergence as Khārijites against the Lord (may He be exalted) on the Day of Ṣiffīn when they said to him, "No judgment except for Allah,", beside their going out to war against him in Nahrawān, and the Master's defeat of them.

Perhaps someone will now come and say: “Who said that the Khārijites were outwardly among those who loved the Master and declared their loyalty to him?”

Here are some reports that indicate the contrary, and that they were among those who claimed to love the Amir and support him.

The tradition is long, so we will take from it what is needed.

Our Master Abū ‘Abdillāh Al-Ṣādiq (may his glory be exalted) said: When the truce between Amir Al-Mouminine (may his glory be exalted) and Mu‘āwiyah (may Allah curse him) ended, Amir Al-Mouminine ordered the proclamation in Kūfah and Baṣrah, which are the two Iraqs. Then the tradition reached the conversation between the Master (may his glory be exalted) and the Khārijites: "Tell me what you intended by fighting without question or answer?" They said: "We found fault with things for which it is lawful for us to kill you for one of them." He said to them (may his glory be exalted): "Mention them." They said: "First: That you were the brother of the Messenger of Allah and his successor, the Caliph after him, the decider of his debt, and the fulfiller of his promises. The Messenger of Allah took the pledge for you from the Muslims in four places: on the Day of the House, in the Pledge of Al-Riḍwān, under the tree, in the house of Umm Salamah, and on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm, and he named you Amir Al-Mouminine.
