Abu Ja'far al-Ahwal Mu'min al-Taq, Abu Basir al-Asadi, Yunus ibn Abd al-Rahman, Mu'awiyah ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, Muhammad ibn Jundub, Fadaweih al-Kurdi, Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Furat, and others, may the prayers of God be upon them all.

There are individuals who are praised esoterically but condemned exoterically, and they are the "tested ones" (al-mumtaḥanīn), such as Master Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam1, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, Aqil ibn Abi Talib, Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, Abu Nuwas, and others, may the prayers of God be upon them all.

And there are individuals who are praised exoterically but condemned esoterically, such as Zurarah ibn A'yan, Muhammad ibn Muslim, Burayd al-Ijli, Abu Basir al-Muradi, Ibn Abi Ya'fur, Abu Bakr al-Hadrami, and others, may the Almighty, the All-Powerful, curse them for their shortcomings.

Footnotes

1When Amir al-Mu’minin, may his glory be exalted, wished to manifest the Occultation (al-ghaybah)—glorified is He who is never absent—from the eyes of mortals, he said from his pulpit, with all the people of his kingdom before him: "Which of you will bear the curse for my sake until the Day of Resurrection?" No one spoke, due to the Lord's preordained will for them. The first among them to speak was Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam, who said, "I, O my master, will bear the curse for you until the Day of Resurrection." So, He made him the head of the rank of the tested ones and the first of the levels of the Small World. At that point, the Lord manifested the Occultation—glorified is He who is never absent—from the eyes of mortals at his hand. So for one whom the Lord has singled out for this station and manifested the Occultation at his hand, how can he be of this creation? Or how can any of the worldly conditions apply to him? Rather, he is from the world of light, the people of high ranks. A parallel to this is reported in the books of the people of the exterior regarding Jesus, the son of Mary. Ibn Humayd narrated to us, saying: Ya'qub al-Qummi narrated to us, from Harun ibn Antarah, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: Jesus was brought to a house with seventeen of his disciples, and they were surrounded. When the persecutors entered, God made all of the disciples appear in the image of Jesus. They said to them, "You have bewitched us! You must bring out Jesus to us, or we will kill all of you!" So Jesus said to his companions, "Who among you will purchase his soul today for Paradise?" A man from among them said, "I will!" He went out to them and said, "I am Jesus"—for God had made him appear in Jesus's image. They took him, killed him, and crucified him. It was for this reason that the matter was made to appear so to them, and they thought they had killed Jesus, and the Christians likewise thought it was Jesus. But God raised Jesus to Himself on that day.
