Jaber bin Yazid al-Ju'fi (submission be to him) said: Then the sun rose high, and my Master said: "O Jaber, call the servant." I called him to him. He said to him: "Bring the Shifar (large knives) which I ordered you to prepare yesterday." The servant went and did not tarry before he arrived carrying a basket (zanbil) he could barely carry. He placed it before us. Then my Master said: "O Jaber, let every person among you strike his hand into this basket and take from these knives whichever knife he likes." Each person among us extended his hand to the basket and took a knife. Not one of us remained but that he took a knife in his hand, and all that was in the basket was exhausted as if they had been counted according to our number.
Jaber said: When the knives were in our hands—and they were sharp-edged—each person among us began to examine his knife. In his examination, he would find his name and his father's name written upon it. He would marvel at that, turn to the one beside him, and say to him: "O my brother, have you seen anything more amazing than this? I struck my hand towards these knives and took a knife upon which is written my name and my father's name." The other would say: "And so did I." He would say to him: "Show me your knife." He would show him, and he would find it as he mentioned. He would say to him: "Swap my knife for your knife." He would say: "Take it." When he took it and it was in his hand, he would examine it, and in his examination, he would find his name and his father's name written upon it. The other would find the same. The group's amazement at this was prolonged, while my Master looked at them and what state they were in without speaking to any of them.
Then he said to the servant: "Open the door of that inner room." He opened the door of a room that was to the side of the house. Then he said to the group: "Let every one of you stand up, enter that room to find a sheep, take it, and come out." Jaber said: I was the first to stand. I entered the room, and there was nothing in it but a single sheep, no other. Suddenly, it was a horned he-goat, huge in body, with high horns, abundant hair, a large belly, with two red eyes, two thick lips, and two drooping lips. Suddenly, it lolled out a tongue like a cubit [in length]. I feared it and was wary that it might initiate an attack against me. I wanted to return and exit away from it due to its terror, but I feared that in doing so I would be disobeying my Master’s command, especially since I had preceded the people. I said to myself: "If I strike my hand towards this sheep, take it, and go out, another will enter to take [one] and find nothing, because there is nothing else here." I headed towards it. When it saw me heading towards it, it took refuge in one of the corners of the room,
