It was narrated that when the Jews gathered to kill our Master Jesus, they came to Him with Judas Iscariot. Judas went ahead of them and entered the house where Jesus was, to see if He was there and inform them. When Judas entered, he saw the Master Al-Masih sitting. He kissed Him between His eyes, and the Master Al-Masih said to him: 'This is a kiss of treachery.' He wiped His hand over his face, and cast His resemblance upon him. Judas came out to tell them that He was in the house. When the Jews saw him in the image of the Master Al-Masih, they thought it was Him, so they leaped upon him while he was saying: 'I am Judas!' The Master Al-Masih manifested the concealment (Ghaybah), which is His saying: {They did not kill him for certain, rather God raised him to Himself}. God, Glorified and Exalted, exonerated Him from killing and crucifixion.1

He, Glorified be He, said regarding the resemblance of the cursed Judas: {And you will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying, 'Is there any way to return?'}.2 {No! It is just a word he is saying, and behind them is a barrier (Barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected}.3

When the Magnificent Meaning (Al-Ma'na), Exalted and Magnificent, wished to manifest the concealment (Ghaybah) at Karbala—Exalted is He who is not absent—He said to His elite and His friends: 'Who among you will bear the killing that I will manifest?' Everyone held back from answering. Hanzalah said: 'I will bear it, O my Mawla.'4

(...And when He saw His brother, our Master Al-Abbas ibn Ali, sincere in the struggle before Him, He cast His resemblance upon Rushdah ibn Sinan...)5

In the two previous reports, the Mawla intended to test the creation and asked them who would bear the killing that He would manifest. Hanzalah stood up and said, 'I will.' When the Mawla saw his sincerity of intention and devotion, He did not let the pain of the iron touch him, because the believers are also exonerated from that, and He made it befall the Opponent (Al-Didd, may God curse him), as will be mentioned in the next chapter.

It was mentioned in the Ziyarah (salutation/visitation) of our Master Al-Abbas, may his glory be exalted, that he said: 'I bear witness that you were neither humiliated nor punished.'6
