To proceed:
For when I saw that the scholars of our companions had recorded traditions in their compilations, and tracked what had been transmitted of Hadith and traces (Athar), and mentioned the Name (al-Ism) and the Named (al-Musamma), and the Veil (al-Hijab) and the Meaning (al-Ma'na); yet every one of them followed his own whim, and interpreted the report according to what suited his purpose, diverting it from its [true] meaning. And they neglected inquiry, investigation, and the indication of the report, and abandoned establishing proofs against the opponents, and committed fault-finding [breach of faith] against the believers.
Some of them turned against others with defamation, and their scholars openly declared cursing. So, if one of them saw a rational proof or a philosophical term, they attributed it to heresy (Ilhad) and harbored the worst belief regarding him. This is because their understandings are limited to the knowledge of the Three Canons (al-Qawanin al-Thalatha), without acknowledgment of [true] Knowledge (al-Ilm).
Thus, they narrate reports from the Truthful Ones (al-Sadiqeen)—may their might be exalted—while not knowing the meaning of what they said nor what they intended by them.
