If you say: "He understood the command and prohibition from the Eternal through an intermediary," the same argument binds you regarding that [intermediary] as bound you regarding the Messenger, and this has already been presented.

We shall clarify our belief regarding him, and we say: The Master of the Religious Law (Sahib al-Shari'ah) whom you saw is the veil (hijab) for those looking at him. If he brings forth power, that is the proof of the Powerful One; and if he brings forth incapacity, those are the attributes of the human veil.

The proof of this is that we have found that every body has a shadow in the sun or a shadow in the moon. Yet most Muslims agree that he [the Prophet] did not have a shadow. Thus, we knew [the reality] to be contrary to what you saw.

God, the Exalted, has said: He is the First and the Last, the Manifest (al-Zahir) and the Hidden (al-Batin).

If He did not manifest to His creation, His saying "the Manifest" would have no meaning here.

The incapacity is attributed to what you saw of the human form.

And the power is attributed to the Eternal.

High Exalted is God above opposites (azdad) with great sublimity. Verily, He has power over all things.
