If he is loathed in his town for abandoning his lineage, let him depart to a town where its people do not know him. He should manifest to the common folk (al-Amma) and the elite (al-Khassa) as one of the common people. If he does that, he is the pure Alawite, and he is an Alawite in the Gnosis (Ma'rifa) of Allah and His Oneness (Wahdaniyya) in prosperity and adversity, hardship and ease, and the exoteric and the esoteric."

Then he said: "O my brother, and where can one like the one I described to you be found? This description belongs only to the holder of the rank of the Orphan (al-Yatim), or a Chief (Naqib), or a Noble (Najib), or a Select (Mukhtass), or a Sincere (Mukhlis), or a Tested one (Mumtahan). For the holders of the ranks are the [true] Alawites who have ascended (Alu) in the Gnosis of Allah to the Highest, and have risen in the esoteric sciences to the seven heavens, and settled in the seven earths. They took for every heaven an abode and for every earth a house, inhabiting them as the luminous spirit inhabits the virtuous light. Whosoever calls himself by this name without Gnosis, the angels of the heavens and the earth curse him."
